I talk a lot with small business owners about how . And it’s absolutely true! But it’s also important to recognise that there’s a difference between hoping and expecting. Let me unpack this a little, starting with a question.
What actions are you taking to get you to where you want to go?
This of course assumes that you know where you want to go. So many small business owners have lacklustre sales goals; things like “I want to make more revenue”, “I want to make more sales”, or “I want to break even”.
Here’s the truth: these are wishes, not goals
Wishes are fine, but they’re not goals. And if you really want to improve your sales, you need dynamic goals that really motivate you to reach for the stars. When you have mediocre goals — and it’s face it, “I want to break even” isn’t particularly amazing — you’re setting yourself to be ordinary, not outstanding.
In this business climate, you have to aim for outstanding. And that comes down to your expectations
And that requires belief. I always feel it’s so wonderful to experience the curiosity and confidence of young children. They believe that everything’s possible. But then what happens to children as they get older? They start to change their expectations.
Expectations are everything
You don’t get what you want in life, you get what you expect. You can start off expecting to achieve everything, and in the main, you’ll achieve many of these things. But it’s the things that you don’t achieve that start to chip away at your expectations and take you into the mindset of “It’s better to aim low and not be disappointed.”
Starting to realise you have an expectation problem? Here’s how to start shifting it
We have an in-depth course on this very subject in the because we’ve seen just how important expectations and mindset is when it comes to sales. But if you’re just looking for a quick process to get you started, ask yourself:
How successful do you really want to be?
What do you really want to achieve?
When do you want to achieve it by?
Sounds simple, but you have to start somewhere. And remember, a goal is just a wish until you put it into action!
So remember, think BIG goals! And EXPECT to achieve them
I know you can do it 🙂
Until next time,
